Definition
挂号 (guà hào) means 'to register' but only in two specific contexts: at a hospital/clinic for an appointment or sending mail by registered post. It is narrower than 登记 (dēng jì, general name/info registration) and 注册 (zhù cè, formal enrollment or account registration). As a separable verb, 号 can be split off (e.g. 挂了一个号).
