Definition
挣扎 (zhēng zhá) describes a desperate struggle against a difficult situation, often physical or mental. Unlike 挣 (zhèng) 'to break free physically', it does not imply success. It contrasts with 奋斗 and 拼搏, which are proactive efforts toward a goal, and with 斗争, which is confrontational.
