Definition
推辞 (tuī cí) means to politely decline an invitation, offer, or appointment, often out of modesty or reluctance. It is more conversational than 谢绝 (xiè jué), which is formal and often used in written notices (e.g., 谢绝参观 'no visitors'). Both are polite, but 推辞 implies personal hesitation while 谢绝 is a firm, courteous refusal.
