插画主要用作名词，指书刊、杂志中的插图或配图。它也可以作动词-宾语结构（离合词），意思是“插入画”或“给作品添加插图”，但动词用法比较少见，更自然的说法是“画插画”或“加入插画”。作为离合词时，可以在“插”和“画”之间插入其他成分，例如“插几幅画”。
