Definition
敬礼 (jìng lǐ) means 'to salute', a formal gesture of respect common in military contexts. It is a separable verb (离合词): the 礼 can be split, as in 敬了一个礼. The near-synonym 致敬 (zhì jìng) also means 'to salute/pay tribute', but is used more broadly for honoring someone in a formal or commemorative setting, not limited to the physical hand gesture.
