暂时 (zàn shí) means 'temporary, for the time being' and is the everyday word for a short-term situation that will change. 临时 (lín shí) also means 'temporary' but often implies 'at the last moment' or 'makeshift'; 暂且 (zàn qiě) and 姑且 (gū qiě) are more literary adverbs meaning 'for now, tentatively'.
