Definition
暮 is a bound morpheme (黏着语素) — it cannot stand alone and always appears as part of a compound word. It carries two related senses: (1) the time of day just after sunset (dusk, evening), as in 暮色 (dusk scene) and 暮春 (late spring); (2) the final or declining stage of something (towards the end, late), as in 暮年 (old age, declining years). When you see 暮 in a word, it adds a poetic or literary tone; in everyday speech, 晚上 or 傍晚 are more common for 'evening'.
