本子 (běn zi) is the everyday word for a notebook or exercise book — a blank or lined book for writing in class or at home. It differs from 笔记本 (bǐ jì běn), which also means 'notebook' but more often refers to a bound journal or a laptop computer. 书 (shū) is a published book, not a notebook.
