此外 (cǐ wài) is a formal, written conjunction meaning 'besides, in addition, furthermore'. It introduces an additional point, often at the start of a sentence, and is more formal than 而且 (ér qiě, 'moreover') or 另外 (lìng wài, 'in addition'). Unlike 而且, it does not pair with 不但...而且... patterns.
