Definition
殉职 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to die in the line of duty'. It is used mainly for soldiers, police, firefighters, and other professionals who die while performing their official duties. The object 职 can be separated from 殉 when adding a measure word or aspectual marker: 殉了职 ('died on duty'), 殉过职 ('have died on duty before'). Do not insert a direct object after 殉职; if you need to specify the person, use a prepositional phrase like 在岗位上殉职.
