Definition
殊死 (shū sǐ) literally means 'sacrificing one's life' and is used to describe a struggle or resistance that is desperate and puts everything on the line. It functions primarily as an attributive modifier (e.g. 殊死搏斗, 殊死抵抗) rather than a standalone noun. Note: In very old texts, 殊死 also referred to the death penalty, but this usage is rare in modern Chinese.
