Definition
殖民 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to colonize' or 'to establish a colony'. The verb 殖 ('to plant, to establish') and the object 民 ('people') can be separated when you add aspect markers, measure words, or modifiers between them — for example, 殖过民 (colonized before) or 殖了很多民 (colonized many places). It's used in historical and political contexts to describe the establishment of control over a foreign territory and its inhabitants.
