求婚 (qiú hūn) is the act of asking someone to marry you — the proposal itself. 订婚 (dìng hūn) is the engagement that follows: the formal agreement to marry after the proposal is accepted. Think of 求婚 as the question and 订婚 as the 'yes' and the ring.
