Definition
泰山 is the name of a sacred mountain in Shandong, one of China's Five Great Mountains, with immense cultural and historical significance. Because of its imposing stature, the mountain is used metaphorically in fixed expressions like 重于泰山 ('heavier than Mount Tai') to indicate something of great weight, importance, or stability. In polite address, the same term also refers to one's wife's father, reflecting the respect associated with the mountain.
