Definition
淡出 is a resultative verb formed from 淡 (faint) and 出 (out), literally 'fade out'. Originally a film-industry term for a scene gradually disappearing to black, it has expanded to mean any gradual withdrawal from an activity, sphere, or public eye. As a resultative complement verb, it emphasizes the outcome of the action — the process of becoming faint and exiting. It can be used transitively (with 了) or intransitively.
