Definition
爬树 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to climb a tree'. Because the two characters form a verb and its object, they can separate when you add a measure word, aspect marker, or duration — for example, 爬了一次树 ('climbed a tree once') or 爬了三次树 ('climbed the tree three times'). You cannot put an additional direct object after 爬树 since 'tree' is already the object; to name a specific tree, use a prepositional phrase like 爬到那棵树上.
