Definition
特区 refers to a specially designated zone with distinct policies, most famously China's Special Economic Zones (经济特区) like Shenzhen and Zhuhai, which were established in the 1980s as experimental areas for market reform and opening-up. It can also be used more generally for other types of specially designated zones (e.g., military or administrative), but the most common reference in Chinese is to the SEZs.
