Definition
狼藉 is a noun that describes a state of disorder or disarray, but it almost never stands alone in modern Chinese. It is almost always used in two fixed phrases: 杯盘狼藉 (cups and dishes in disarray, describing a messy scene after a meal) and 声名狼藉 (a notorious reputation). You cannot use 狼藉 to freely describe a messy room — that would be 乱七八糟. In the first phrase it conveys physical messiness; in the second it conveys a ruined reputation.
