Definition
王 is a bound form (语素) meaning 'king' or 'royal'. It rarely stands alone in modern Mandarin; instead it appears in compounds such as 国王 (guówáng, 'king'), 王子 (wángzǐ, 'prince'), 女王 (nǚwáng, 'queen'), and 王室 (wángshì, 'royal family'). In classical Chinese it can also be a verb meaning 'to rule as king' (pronounced wàng), but that usage is not covered by this entry.
