Definition
现实主义 is a loanword from Japanese (现实主义, from English 'realism'). In Chinese, it primarily refers to realism in literature and art (depicting life truthfully without idealization), but also appears in political discourse (political realism in international relations). In PRC contexts, it is often contrasted with romanticism (浪漫主义) and carries associations with socialist realism (社会主义现实主义). As a noun, it combines with descriptors like 批判现实主义 (critical realism) and 魔幻现实主义 (magical realism).
