Definition
男 (nán) is an adjective meaning 'male' used before nouns to specify gender, like 男同学 (male classmate) or 男老师 (male teacher). Unlike the nouns 男人 (man), 男性 (male gender), and 男子 (man), 男 cannot stand alone as a noun. For animals, use 公 (gōng) instead.
