病魔 (bìng mó) literally means 'sickness demon' — a metaphor for severe, persistent illness that torments a person like an evil spirit. You often see it in phrases like 战胜病魔 ('defeat the disease demon', i.e. conquer a serious illness) or 病魔缠身 ('be haunted by the sickness demon', i.e. suffer from a chronic disease).
