社交 refers to social interaction and contact in general — the concept of being social. Unlike 交流 (to exchange ideas/information, which is broader), 社交 specifically means social contact or networking. And unlike 应酬 (obligatory or business socializing), 社交 is neutral and covers any social interaction, from casual to formal.
