Definition
竞争 (jìngzhēng) is the broad, general verb for 'compete' – it describes rivalry for a goal (a job, a prize, market share) without implying a formal event. 比赛 (bǐsài) is narrower: an organized match or game. 参赛 (cān sài) means 'to take part in a competition', not necessarily to outdo others.
