Definition
筛 (shāi) means 'to sift, to sieve' — physically passing dry particles through a mesh, or metaphorically screening candidates/data. It contrasts with 筛选 (shāi xuǎn), which adds 选 'to select' and implies a deliberate selection process from a set; 筛 alone can just mean the mechanical action. For liquids, 筛 means warming/pouring wine (a specific culinary use), unlike 灌 (guàn) 'to pour into' or 淋 (lín) 'to drench/ strain'.
