终止 (zhōng zhǐ) means to formally and permanently end something, such as a contract, project, or relationship. It implies a final, irreversible stop, unlike 停止 (tíng zhǐ, a general stop) or 中止 (zhōng zhǐ, a temporary suspension). 终结 (zhōng jié) is similar but often used for processes or stories.
