绕远儿 (rào yuǎn r) is a colloquial separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to go the long way round' — the 远儿 part can be separated, e.g. 绕了个远儿. Unlike the formal 绕行 (used for detours due to road closures), 绕远儿 emphasizes taking a longer route, often by choice. It differs from 走弯路 (zǒu wān lù), which is more often figurative ('to take a roundabout approach').
