继位 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to succeed to the throne'. It is used in formal contexts about monarchs and imperial succession. Like other separable verbs, the object 位 can be separated from 继 when inserting aspect markers or complements: 继了位 ('succeeded to the throne'), 继过位 ('has succeeded to the throne').
