Definition
缠身 is a separable verb-object compound (离合词): 缠 'to entangle' + 身 'body'. It describes something (worries, illness, debt, problems) that preoccupies or weighs heavily on a person, like 'to be plagued by X'. It often appears after the troubling thing, e.g. 债务缠身 'plagued by debt'. As a separable verb, 缠 and 身 can split when a duration, aspect marker, or modifier is inserted between them, e.g. 缠了身 (once entangled) or 缠着身 (currently entangling). The pattern is: [source of trouble] + 缠身, not [person] + 缠身 + [trouble].
