Definition
缴纳 (jiǎo nà) is a formal verb used for mandatory payments to an authority – taxes, fines, membership dues, tuition. It contrasts with the more general 支付 (zhī fù), which covers any payment (e.g. buying goods). 缴 (jiǎo) alone can mean 'pay' but also 'confiscate', so it's less precise; 交纳 (jiāo nà) is close but slightly less official.
