老人 (lǎo rén) is the general, everyday word for an elderly person. It is more commonly used in speech than 高龄 (gāo líng), which is formal and written, and is not gender-specific like the respectful term 老太太 (lǎo tài tai). In formal contexts, 老人 can also refer to one's aged parents or grandparents.
