老化 (lǎo huà) means 'to age' or 'to become outdated' – used for populations, materials, knowledge, or technology that naturally grow old or obsolete over time. Unlike 落后 (luò hòu) 'to fall behind', which compares against current standards or competitors, 老化 focuses on the intrinsic process of becoming old or less functional.
