Definition
背负 (bēifù) means to carry a physical load on one's back, but is most often used figuratively for bearing a heavy responsibility, burden, or expectation. It is more formal and literary than 负担 (fùdān), which is the everyday word for bearing costs or duties; 肩负 (jiānfù) is a near-synonym but emphasizes shouldering a mission or task with a sense of duty. 背负 often implies a weight that is difficult to escape.
