Definition
胜 (shèng) means 'to win' or 'to surpass'. It is more formal than the everyday 赢 (yíng, to win a game) and is common in written Chinese or for serious competitions (wars, elections). It also has a second meaning 'to surpass' (e.g., surpass others in ability), which 赢 does not share.
