胸 (xiōng) refers to the physical chest area (the body part) and, figuratively, the heart/mind as the seat of emotions. It is the most basic, standalone word for 'chest' — broader than 胸膛 (xiōng táng, the front of the chest) and less literary than 怀 (huái, bosom, often in set phrases). For inner feelings, 心里 (xīn lǐ) is the everyday spoken choice.
