Definition
般 (bān) is a bound morpheme used in a handful of common compounds where it adds the sense of 'kind, sort, way'. The most frequent is 一般 (yībān) meaning 'general, ordinary, same as'. Others include 百般 (bǎibān) 'in every possible way', 万般 (wànbān) 'all kinds of', and 这般 (zhèbān) 'such, this kind of'. Note that the Buddhist term 般若 (bōrě 'prajñā') uses the same character but with a different pronunciation (bō), which is rare outside of religious contexts.
