Definition
芝 is a bound morpheme (cannot stand alone) that appears in common compounds: 芝麻 (zhīma, sesame), 灵芝 (língzhī, a medicinal mushroom), and as a transliteration in 芝士 (zhīshì, cheese). In classical Chinese it referred to a fragrant herb or iris, but that sense is now rare.
