Definition
英 (yīng) is a bound morpheme (b.f.) — it cannot stand alone as a word but appears as the first character in many compounds. It has two main sense clusters: (1) 'hero, outstanding talent,' as in 英雄 (yīngxióng, hero) and 英俊 (yīngjùn, handsome/sharp); (2) 'England, British, English,' as in 英国 (Yīngguó, UK), 英语 (Yīngyǔ, English language), and 英文 (Yīngwén, written English). Since the same morpheme carries these two unrelated meanings, context determines which sense is active.
