Definition
获释 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to be released (from prison)'. It consists of 获 'to obtain' and 释 'release'; the subject is the person who is set free, and you often see it with 被 (passive) or in a 把 construction. As a separable verb, you can insert aspect markers like 了 or 过 between the two characters: 获了释, 获过释. The object (the jail or authority) is not placed after 获释 — instead, you say 他被警方获释. Note that 获释 focuses on the fact of being released, not the process.
