蔑视 (miè shì) is a formal, literary verb meaning 'to despise, to look down upon with contempt'. It is stronger and more written than 看不起 (kàn bu qǐ, colloquial 'look down on') and 鄙视 (bǐ shì, 'despise'), and carries a sense of scornful disregard.
