虚假 (xū jiǎ) means 'false, fake' and is used for abstract things like information, claims, or appearances (e.g., a fake smile). It is more formal than 假 (jiǎ), which can also describe concrete objects (e.g., a fake watch). Unlike 虚伪 (xū wěi), which focuses on insincerity in a person's character, 虚假 describes something that is not genuine or true.
