虫子 (chóng zi) is the everyday, general word for any small creature like an insect, bug, or worm. Its sibling 昆虫 (kūn chóng) is the formal/technical term for 'insect' (class Insecta) only — so you wouldn't use 昆虫 for a worm or caterpillar.
