Definition
蚁 is a bound form (黏着语素) that cannot stand alone as a word. It appears as a root in compound words related to ants, most commonly 蚂蚁 (mǎyǐ, 'ant'), as well as 蚁穴 (yǐxué, 'ant nest'), 蚁后 (yǐhòu, 'queen ant'), and 蚁群 (yǐqún, 'ant colony'). You will almost never see 蚁 used by itself in modern Chinese.
