要强 (yào qiáng) describes a person who is determined to excel and refuses to fall behind — it emphasizes a driven, ambitious personality. It is close to 好胜 (hào shèng 'competitive, eager to win'), but 要强 adds a sense of inner resolve and self-improvement beyond just winning. 坚强 (jiān qiáng) is about being firm and resilient in the face of hardship, not about striving to be better.
