Definition
认定 (rèn dìng) has two related meanings: 'to determine/conclude after investigation' and 'to firmly believe/be convinced'. It is more formal and deliberate than 相信 (xiāng xìn 'believe'), and more objective than 确信 (què xìn) or 坚信 (jiān xìn), which emphasize subjective certainty. Compared to 断定 (duàn dìng) and 判定 (pàn dìng), 认定 can also carry a sense of identification or recognition.
