Definition
识字 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to learn to read' or 'to become literate'. It can be split: the verb 识 and the object 字 can have measure words, modifiers, or aspect markers inserted between them, e.g., 识了几个字 ('recognized a few characters') or 识不识字 ('literate or not'). You do not add a direct object after 识字; instead, use 识字 as a self-contained phrase.
