语言 (yǔyán) is the general term for 'language' as a communication system (e.g., 汉语, English). Unlike 汉语 (Chinese, HSK1) which names one specific language, 语言 is the broader category. It is also more systematic than 言语 (yányǔ, HSK6), which refers more to actual speech or utterances.
