Definition
说情 (shuō qíng) means 'to intercede' or 'to plead for someone else' — you ask a person in authority to be lenient or forgiving toward someone who has done something wrong. It is a separable verb (离合词): you can insert other words, as in 说个情 'put in a good word'. It is always used in a context where someone is in trouble and needs help from a third party.
