Definition
起名 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to give a name (to someone or something)'. You can split 起 and 名 to insert a measure word, adjective, or other modifier: 起了个名 ('gave a name'), 起一个好听的名字 ('give a nice-sounding name'). The object being named usually comes before 起名 with 给 (给孩子起名 'name a child') or is implied.
