Definition
辙 has several connected meanings. Its literal sense is 'wheel ruts' — the parallel tracks left by a vehicle. From that it extends to 'route' or 'course' (the path or direction taken, literally or figuratively), and then further to 'way, method' in a more abstract sense — especially in fixed idioms like 没辙 ('have no way out / no solution') and 有辙 ('have a way'). In traditional opera and song lyrics, 辙 also means 'rhyme' (e.g. 合辙押韵 'fit the rhyme and rhythm').
